8.29.24 Prayer Room – Psalm 24

Psalm 24 was probably written to be sung when the ark of the covenant, which is associated with God’s divine presence, was taken up from the house of Obed-edom, and to remain upon the hill of Zion. David’s first use of his power as king was to get the presence of God back in the midst of his people. Psalm 24 is about the arrival of human beings into the presence of God and the mutual arrival of the King of glory into the presence of those who seek his face. Psalm 24 was probably written to be sung when the ark of the covenant, which is associated with God’s divine presence, was taken up from the house of Obed-edom, and to remain upon the hill of Zion. PSALM 24

1The earth and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants, belong to the Lord;

2 for he laid its foundation on the seasand established it on the rivers.

3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?Who may stand in his holy place?

4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not appealed to what is false, and who has not sworn deceitfully.

5 He will receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6 Such is the generation of those who inquire of him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah

7 Lift up your heads, you gates! Rise up, ancient doors! Then the King of glory will come in.

8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, you gates! Rise up, ancient doors! Then the King of glory will come in.

10 Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord of Armies, he is the King of glory. Selah

HEAR

The Psalm glorifies the true God, and proclaims his universal dominion, it speaks to our need for repentance and ability to commune with the Lord, and it testifies our desire for the King of glory to come and be made manifest among all people.

Take this time to listen to the Holy Spirit and pray. Specifically think about:

  • Where are you living in sin? Ask God to clean your hands and purify your heart (v.5).

  • What gives you the power to ascend the mountain of the Lord tonight (v.3)? Thank Jesus for enacting a living doorway to God through his torn flesh (Hebrews 10:20) and repent of any sin.

  • Are you welcoming God into your midst? See that the earth is the Lord’s (v.1) and welcome the King of glory in (v.7).

  • Read through Psalm 24 and ask God to speak to you. Meditate on the text.

RESPOND:

Use this time to respond to God.

  • Praise God for his sovereignty and dominion over the earth. Ask God to restore a vision of him ruling and reigning over campuses, workplaces, apartments (v.1).

  • Pray for the restoration of our hearts to see the King of Glory for who he really is (vv.7-10). Declare that we want God back in our midst (vv.7-9)

  • Intercede on behalf of nations and generations – pray that they may seek the face of God (vv.5-6).

  • Ask the Holy Spirit how else you can pray and press into that.
