Luke 22:14-23
Institution of the Lord's Supper
14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.
Revelation 19:6-9
The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready;
8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
HEAR:
I spend a lot of time talking at God and not talking with God. When we talk with someone, we give them space to also speak. I encourage us to put aside our list of things we want to bring attention to God for a moment and let the Holy Spirit speak to us.
Use this time to listen to the Holy Spirit and pray. Specifically think about:
Remember that God is in ultimate control. He had control during Passover (past), Jesus’ betrayal (present), and the marriage of the Lamb (future). Give glory to God for what He has done in your life. Think about specific times and prayers that He has answered for you. (Rev 19:7)
Prepare yourselves to be invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. What sins do you need to give over to the Lord to purify your heart, mind, and soul in readiness for Him? (Rev 19:8)
RESPOND:
Jesus broke bread with everyone at the table even, though He knew Judas was going to betray Him – “but behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table” (v. 21). His love and Gospel is for you and for me even though we have betrayed Him multiple times. He invites us to the table again and again.
Use this time to respond to God:
Repent on ways that you have denied Jesus for worldly gains in your life lately. (Luke 22:21-22)
Give glory to Jesus for living the perfect life we cannot and dying the death we deserve. Recognize that we serve a living God, a resurrected Messiah. (Luke 22: 19-20)
Intercede for those who are close to you that do not know Jesus. Ask that the Spirit would work in their hearts so they would come to know the goodness of Christ. That they would be invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.
